Billybob posted a new article on the Club Penguin community blog yesterday, a rather sad one. This is a special message from Lane Merrifield (aka Billyb0b), who was once one of the co-founders of Club Penguin. But, yesterday (although I’ve only just found out today), Billybob has quit the Club Penguin team as stated in his special message on the Community Blog. Despite having quit the Club Penguin team, Lane (Billybob) will still be logging on to hang out with us. He’ll still be around a bit until the new year (2013). We’ll miss you, Billybob!
Billybob has quit the Club Penguin team! – Special Message from Billybob
I hope you’re all as excited about the Halloween Party as I am. The office is buzzing today, it’s going to be amazing!
I wanted to make sure you heard it directly from me, after 7 incredible years at Club Penguin, I’m going to be moving on. I’ll be around for the next few months to make sure everything is all good. Then I’ll be focusing on building some cool stuff for schools. I hope I’m able to help with learning the same way I have been able to help build Club Penguin.
I have had such an incredible time being a part of Club Penguin over the years and serving you guys everyday. The Club Penguin Team is better than ever, and the plans we’ve made for the next year are awesome! My friends Polo Field and Businesmoose will keep you updated with all the latest behind-the-scenes updates here on the blog. Even though I won’t be working at Club Penguin anymore, I’ll still be around and logging on to hang out.
You are the reason I’ve done this for so long and I am so thankful you’ve let me be a part of your lives. You are what makes Club Penguin special. Never forget that.
Until then… Waddle on!
- Lane (aka Billybob)
Lane also sent an e-mail out to his Disney colleagues (don’t know how you got this, Trainman. haxor?)
To my friends at Disney:
Five years ago our little company joined Disney and I had no idea then what an amazing adventure it would turn out to be. Since that time, I have had the privilege of working alongside and learning from so many of you and the joy of creating great products together. I appreciate the opportunity and the faith this company placed in me and the ways it has allowed me to grow both as a leader and as a person. I am also grateful for the countless memories this company has created for me and my family. Our team has grown Club Penguin from a simple idea to being the largest global virtual world for kids for seven straight years while maintaining a significant profit margin. I am incredibly proud to have been a part of Club Penguin, and I know that it will continue to grow and thrive.
Like many entrepreneurs though, there comes a time when the desire to create something new outweighs the comfort of what’s known and for me that time has come.
Over the past year, I’ve invested in a new educational startup called Freshgrade that focuses on creating mobile cloud-based assessment software for teachers and students and it has reached a place where more of my time is needed. We started Club Penguin in order to enhance our children’s online experience and now I hope to do the same with their educational experience.
Thank you for the role you’ve played in my journey and I truly hope that even though my business card may change, my friendship with so many of you will not.
I’ll miss Billybob… He was always a great guy and did an amazing job at Club Penguin.
Have a great day!
